CouncilGroundbreakingOn July 5th, a Ceremony marking the beginning of the NNC Project was held downtown. The ceremony was attended by Nanaimo MLAs Leonard Krog and Ron Cantelon along with Mayor and Council as well as many business representatives from the downtown core.

Pictured left is MLA Ron Cantelon, Mayor Korpan and Councillors performing an official 'ground-breaking' to mark the beginning of demolition to make way for the New Nanaimo Centre. Demoliton is expected to take place over the summer.

Mayor Korpan said "While the New Nanaimo Centre project marks the beginning of a new chapter in the evolution of downtown, it is important to embrace the past. The City is working with groups like the Downtown Nanaimo Partnership to honour and commemorate long-standing businesses and individuals that have left a legacy or a significant impression on the downtown community."

"Downtown is open for business while the project proceeds. We invite the community to come experience the multitude of excellent shops and services offered in the heart of our City," said Councillor Tom Krall.

May 4th Open House

An open house was held at Port Place in the Food Court on Wednesday, May 4 from 12 noon to 8 pm to provide information and receive comments regarding the proposed design for the New Nanaimo Centre. You can view the design images below.

Design Principles

As part of the planning and development of the New Nanaimo Center (NNC) the Cty has retained Wensley Architects and Easton Planning and Development Inc. to assist in the development of the Design Principles for the project. A revised draft of the document is available for viewing (PDF):

The NNC Design Principles if adopted, will assist Staff, the Advisory Design Panel (DAP) and Council during the design review and Development Permit phase of the NNC.

If you would like a hard copy of the document they are available through the Planning Department. If you have any comments or would like clarification with respect to any part of the document please contact Ted Swabey at 755-4451

Once input has been received from the public and the city's Design Panel, the guidelines will be brought forward for Council's endorsement.
