Brickyard Traffic Circle Project

The intersection of Brickyard Rd & Carmanah Way/Broadway Rd is located in the north end of Nanaimo near McGirr Elementary, Rutherford Elementary and Dover Bay Secondary School. The proximity of this intersection to nearby schools makes it a busy route for students and vehicle traffic alike. Within the last 5 years the city has received numerous requests for a crosswalk at this location and report traffic is consistently travelling in excess of the 50km/h speed limit along Brickyard Rd. The proposed upgrades will help to reduce vehicle speeds and create a safer pedestrian route.

Project Objectives

This project will reduce traffic speeds along Brickyard Road, create a safer pedestrian crossing across Brickyard Road and improve east-west pedestrian links between Rutherford Elementary, Dover Bay Secondary and McGirr Elementary.

    Background

Traffic circles are used in the City as traffic calming measures, reducing speeds on neighbourhood streets. While both are circular intersections, traffic circles and roundabouts are different, with roundabouts being equivalent to a traffic signal on a major road.
