Building Conservation Incentives
The City has created a number of financial incentive programs to promote the conservation of heritage buildings listed on the City's Heritage Register.
Downtown Residential Conversion Tax Exemption Program
This property tax incentive program (up to 10 years in length) has two main goals - one is to encourage new downtown residential units in existing heritage buildings; the other is to preserve heritage buildings in the downtown core.
Heritage Facade Improvement Grant Program
This cash grant program was created by the City of Nanaimo in 2003 to provide financial incentives for heritage buildings as part of the City's Downtown Revitalization Strategy. The program is designed to provide cash grants (up to $10,000 per facade facing on to a city street) to encourage rehabilitation and enhancement of heritage buildings located in the City's downtown core, as well as promote economic growth and investment.
Heritage Home Grant Program
Intended for heritage homes, this cash grant program (up to $2,500 per house) mirrors similar heritage home incentive programs in Cities such as Vancouver and Victoria that have been in existence for many years and have encouraged home owners in historic residential areas to fix up and maintain their historic homes.
If you have any questions regarding the incentives above, please contact the City's Heritage Planner at 250-755-4483.
